Magento recently announced the end of 1.x. This is a big deal. One of the main concerns of people who are currently using Magento 1.x is that their website will no longer have the security they need to properly run their businesses. This affects your ability to safely accept payments from customers as well as keep their information safe once you collect the payment.
Upgrading to Magento 2.0
If you’re a Magento lover, don’t worry. You can upgrade to Magento 2.0. However, doing so will be no easy task. It will be expensive, time consuming, and annoying. Many features that are offered with 1.x versions of Magento will no longer be available. This includes extensions, plugins and connectors. So, if you want to have a successful migration to the new Magento, you will need to find some workarounds to make your site function the way you want it to.
Timing is key
If you have made the decision that you want to upgrade to 2.0 you need to do some planning. You don’t want to upgrade too early because Magento 2.0 isn’t quite up and running just yet. You will want to wait until the bugs are fixed, the plugins are created, and all of the other features are figured out. BUT do you really want to wait that long? Then, what happens when all that is fixed and your developer tells you it’s going to take 10 weeks to upgrade... Uh-oh!
Open Source vs Licensed Software
How complicated is your webstore? Do you have a lot of custom solutions built in? If that’s the case, you may want to stick with an open source platform like Magento or WooCommerce. If you are running a simple store with a few products, you may want to skip all the headaches and make your jump over to Shopify.
